New study uncovers differences between meditation, hypnosis, and psychedelics

Plus, medicinal mushrooms and dogs 🐶

Hi there 🍄

This week’s highlights include the guide to medicinal mushrooms and dogs, and an artist using “artist’s bracket” as a canvas.

New study uncovers differences between meditation, hypnosis, and psychedelics

Not the same states of consciousness. Scientists from the University of Zurich recently carried out a study to understand how different methods of inducing altered states of consciousness appear in the brain. The study used brain scans from 107 people and found that the methods — meditation, hypnosis, and psychedelics — caused different changes and reactions, even though people might feel similar experiences from one to the next. The study’s goal is to realize the specific benefits of treatments for various mental health issues, especially those who haven’t found success with existing therapies.

The guide to medicinal mushrooms and canine cancer

Turkey tail for you, turkey tail for them. In the face of the concerning prevalence of cancer in dogs, especially those aged ten and above, many pet owners are seeking gentler, holistic approaches to complement traditional veterinary treatments. Recent research suggests a promising avenue: the incorporation of medicinal mushrooms into your pup's regimen. These mushrooms, known for their remarkable health benefits including anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties, could potentially act as a potent ally in your dog's fight against cancer.

  • I love pocket guides and two of my favorites are by Collins Gem. Based on species found in Britain, Collins Gems Mushrooms contains almost 240 species and it’s the size of your hand. Food for Free is another favorite that’s perfect for urban foraging.

  • This shroomy packable camp chair is lightweight and portable for fall stargazing.

  • These mushroom knife rests are so realistic, just don’t throw them in the pan with your chanterelles.

Marie Heerkens is an American wildlife artist known for writing with fire. Her medium is pyrography, which means writing with fire, though she also is an illustrator, photographer, and graphic artist. For her pyrography works, she begins with Ganoderma applanatum, a type of fungi fittingly nicknamed “the artist’s bracket” and uses a wood-burning kit to draw on the fungus.
