Hi Shroomers. This week: oyster mushrooms contain the same cholesterol-blocking compound as prescription statins, fungi isolated from nuclear test sites absorbed up to 97% of uranium within 24 hours, and a newly published psilocybin therapy protocol reveals that the music playlists guiding each session are as carefully engineered as the dose itself. Also in this issue: morels pack nearly 2× the antioxidant density of other edible mushrooms, cold plasma strips 82% of pesticide residue from shiitake in under 5 minutes, and psilocybin's shared pathway targeting may treat depression and chronic pain at the same time.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Gut barrier boost 🧱 Scaly hedgehog mushroom (Sarcodon imbricatus) produced two low-molecular-weight polysaccharides with distinct gut and immune effects. SIP-1 increased intestinal barrier strength, while also lowering inflammatory cytokines and increasing beneficial microbes. SIP-2 enhanced immune response in macrophages and increased gut bacteria, strengthening immune regulation and gut resilience.
Antioxidant density spike 🧪 Morel mushrooms (Morchella elata and Morchella esculenta) contained 15.76 vs 7.41 mg/g antioxidant compounds, with M. elata showing nearly 2× higher levels. Antioxidant activity reached 4.04 vs 3.16 mg/g, with stronger free radical neutralization in M. elata. This higher antioxidant load helps reduce everyday cell damage and support long-term health.
Cholesterol block pathway ❤️ Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) naturally contains lovastatin at ~0.463 mg/g, a compound that directly blocks cholesterol production in the body. At low concentrations, it shut down key steps involved in making cholesterol, targeting the same pathway as prescription statins. This means it reduces cholesterol at the source rather than just managing levels after the fact.
PSILOCYBIN & LEGISLATION
Therapy protocol deep dive 🎧 This therapy protocol doc for psilocybin-assisted treatment of depression standardizes doses up to 25 mg within 6–8 hour sessions, guided by two therapists and followed by integration at 1 day, 1 week, and up to 12 months. It defines everything from therapist roles to room setup, including eyeshades, continuous monitoring, and tightly controlled “set and setting” to shape the experience. What I found fascinating, among many other things, was that the protocol includes fully curated music playlists organized into timed blocks that guide the emotional arc of the session, positioning sound as a core driver of therapeutic outcomes.
Dual-condition reset 🔄 Psilocybin acts on 5-HT2A receptors in brain regions tied to mood and pain, including the prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex, increasing glutamate signaling and network flexibility. It reduces inflammatory markers like IL-6, a signaling protein your immune system releases when something is wrong, and TNF-α, a key inflammatory signal linked to chronic inflammation, pain, and depression, while boosting BDNF-linked neuroplasticity and disrupting rigid default mode network patterns. Because ~66% of depression patients report pain and over 50% of pain patients meet depression criteria, this shared pathway targeting allows symptoms in both conditions to improve together.
Longevity signal test ⏳ Psilocybin extended lifespan in aged mice and influenced pathways tied to stress resilience and mitochondrial function, key drivers of aging biology. In humans, a comparison of psychedelic users (n=11) vs cancer (n=12) and aging researchers (n=5) showed all groups lived beyond expected lifespan (~73–76 years at age 40), but psychedelic users did not outlive their peers. These results suggest longevity effects are biologically plausible but unproven in humans, requiring long-term, dose-specific studies before translation.
ECOLOGY & CONSERVATION
Living city systems 🌆 Fungi form mycelial networks that detect pollution gradients and deploy enzymes to break down hydrocarbons at measurable degradation rates, while also supporting plant growth through nutrient transfer efficiency. Floating mycelial mats paired with species like oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) absorb and convert toxic compounds into biomass, while mangroves and bivalves add layered filtration to remove heavy metals and microplastics. This creates self-sustaining urban systems that cool cities through evapotranspiration, reduce pollution in water and soil, and continuously expand toward the most degraded areas using heat-driven dispersal.
Forest network disruption 🌲 Clear-cutting removes tree hosts, causing ectomycorrhizal fungi to decline rapidly after harvest and reducing diversity in early-stage forests. Across >1500 sites, species richness recovered and peaked at 30–40 years, but community composition remained altered for up to 100 years, with key old-growth species like Cortinarius and Russula declining long-term.
Radiation cleanup agents ☢️ Fungi isolated from high-radiation soil survived extreme doses up to 8 kGy and maintained growth under uranium and thorium exposure up to 1000 ppm. Within 24 hours, isolates like Talaromyces flavus and Gongronella butleri absorbed up to 97% of uranium and 100% of thorium, with measurable biomass gains up to 4.11 g. These fungi use biosorption, melanin binding, and enzymatic processes to capture and neutralize radioactive metals, enabling direct cleanup of contaminated environments.
Soil toxicity sensors ⏰ Mushrooms act as bioaccumulators, absorbing heavy metals like lead and cadmium directly from contaminated soil and reflecting local pollution levels. Using methods like ICP-MS and atomic absorption spectrometry, metal concentrations can be precisely measured from mushroom tissue, enabling real-time environmental monitoring. This creates a low-cost, scalable system where mushrooms serve as living detectors of toxic contamination across industrial and urban landscapes.
GROWING & GOURMET
Shelf life extender 🧄 Wine-cap mushroom (Stropharia rugosoannulata) treated with garlic essential oil (GEO) showed delayed aerial hyphae growth, with visible mycelial expansion starting at ~8 days vs ~4 days in untreated and fertilizer-treated groups. GEO disrupted redox balance and membrane integrity by altering lipid metabolism and reducing antioxidant capacity, directly suppressing excess surface growth. This slows texture breakdown and moisture loss, preserving appearance and extending shelf life without synthetic preservatives.
Pesticide breakdown tech ⚡ Shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes) treated with cold plasma removed up to 82.5% of fenvalerate pesticide residues at 80 kV in 15 minutes, with most degradation occurring within the first 2–5 minutes. Reactive species like •OH, O₃, and H₂O₂ drove chemical breakdown through hydroxylation and bond cleavage, reducing both residue levels and overall toxicity. This process preserves texture, phenolics, and storage quality while eliminating harmful pesticides without heat or chemical washing.
Fermentation nutrient boost 🌾 Split gill mushroom (Schizophyllum commune) fermentation increased antioxidant compounds up to 3.4× and other protective plant compounds up to 1.8× in wheat. Protein rose from ~10.0 to 12.65 g/100 g while carbohydrates dropped from ~80.1 to 70.4 g/100 g. This turns regular wheat into a higher-protein, antioxidant-rich food that better supports inflammation control and daily cell protection.
Processed food upgrade 🌭 Button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) powder added at 5–10% increased protein up to 32.87% and fiber up to 0.75%, while reducing fat from ~33.65% to as low as 22.08%. At 5% inclusion, sausages had the best flavor and overall taste scores during storage. This improves nutrition and shelf stability in processed foods without sacrificing taste.
